HAEMOGREGARINES - Hepatozoon Miller, 1908
A genus of apicomplexan parasites, Hepatozoon, is occasionally found in cats. In this group of parasites, depending on the species involved, the gamonts are found within red or white blood cells of the vertebrate host; in the cat, the gamonts are found within the white blood cells. Sporogony and merogony occur within the body of the vector, a tick. Cats become infected by the ingestion of the infected tick rather than through the bite of the tick.
