Other Species of Diphyllobothrium and related Genera

Besides other species of Diphyllobothrium that occur in marine mammals and fish-eating birds are species representative of other genera: These genera include Ligula, Digramma, Hexagonoporus, Diplogonoporus, Baylisiella, and Plicobothrium. Diplogonoporusgrandis of whales of the genus Balaenoptera has been reported in Peru and Japan from humans who have had a history of eating raw fish and it is assumed that this is how they obtained the infection. Rare human infections with several other species representing some of the other genera have also been reported. Thus, it would be likely in coastal areas where cats have access to marine fish that infection with species other than Diphyllobothriumlatum are possible..
